Symposium in Reading Education 

Online discussion

Directions: 

This activity will take place in the discussion forum between June 1 and June 13.  Students have two roles in this assignment, discussion leader and discussion participant, with the following responsibilities:

Discussion Leader:

  1. Select one of the major readings.  Email your first, second, and third choices to the instructor by Thursday, May 25. 
  2. Read the selection thoroughly.  
  3. Prepare a two-paragraph synopsis.  The first paragraph should be a brief abstract of the reading, and the second should be a preliminary evaluation, such as your estimation of the reading's importance (or lack thereof).  Email the summary to the instructor for review by May 31. 
  4. Prepare three thought-provoking questions (in your opinion) about the reading.  
  5. When you receive clearance from the instructor, post your synopsis and questions to the discussion forum in your topic area. 
  6. In the discussion forum, respond thoughtfully to each participant's response to any of your questions.

Participants:

  1. Write at least one thoughtful response to a question from each discussion leader.   
  2. Post follow-up responses to at least five other postings.
