Best Practices & Guidelines
Name your home page file either index.html or index.htm. You are free to publish standard html pages, graphics, images, and short sound files on your directory. The names of your files should be short, meaningful, and reflect the proper extension of the file type, such as html, gif, or jpg. It is a good practice to use the 8 dot 3 naming convention, i.e. 8 characters for file name, follow by a 'period', then a 3-4 character extension. Avoid using any spaces in your file names. Spaces cause confusion to the reader and may not work on all web servers. If you have special needs such as large media clips or server side applications, please discuss these needs with the webmaster before proceeding. Your web files are backed up on a regular basis. However, it is a good practice to keep a current copy of your files on another machine. It is your responsibility to clean up old, outdated, unused files. Though your web space can be used to express opinions that are entirely your own, the webmaster reserves the right to take out material which the readers feel is objectionable or interferes with the philosophy and mission of the University.
