Call for Pooley Foundation Award Applications

Robert C. Pooley Research Award 

The amount available for research awards in 2007 is $2,000. Proposals for research which will benefit the teaching of the English language arts in Wisconsin and the nation may be submitted for any amount up to this limit.

Application Procedure

Application should include:

  1.  Name(s) of applicant(s),

  2. School,

  3. School address,

  4. Home address,

  5. Telephone number,

  6. Descriptive title of proposed research,

  7. Research proposal

The proposal should contain:

  1. research objectives

  2. rationale for the research

  3. brief description of any other related research conducted by the applicant

  4. brief description of related research done by others

  5. methods to be used

  6. evaluation procedures to be used

  7. budget estimate itemized

Other information:

  1. Awards are open to teachers (individuals or groups) at any level—elementary, secondary, college. Action research proposals are encouraged.

  2. Research in progress and supported by other funds is not excluded. Researchers should acknowledge other support and indicate reason for requesting additional funds.

  3. Awarded funds must be used for purposes directly connected with the research—materials, secretarial assistance, research assistance, etc.

  4. Up to $500 may be used as a stipend to the researcher.

  5. Awards cannot include travel to meetings or capital equipment.

  6. Applicants must agree that, if the results of their research are published, they will give full acknowledgment to the support of the foundation and WCTE.

  7. The applicant must furnish the foundation board with a report of the results of the research and agree that such a report may be printed, in full, or in part, in WCTE publications.

  8. The research should be completed in the academic year following the date of the award, but special extensions may be granted upon application.

  9. Two-thirds of the award amount is payable upon acceptance, one-third upon submission of the final report.

Jarvis E. Bush Award

Awarded for Successful Techniques in Teaching Composition in the Schools of Wisconsin

Award $200

Application Procedure 

 

Entries should include: 

  1. Name of applicant,

  2. School,

  3. School address,

  4. Level(s) taught,

  5. Home address,

  6. Telephone number,

  7. Title of the entry,

  8. 1000-3000 word essay describing the technique(s) used to teach writing.

The essay should include a specific description of the technique(s), goals, objectives, evaluation procedures, and a summary of classroom results.

Lucile S. Pooley Award

Awarded for Creative Teaching of English Language Arts in the Schools of Wisconsin

 

First Place Award $200                      Second Place Award $100

 

Application Procedure

 

Entries should include:

  1. Name of applicant(s),

  2. School,

  3. School address,

  4. Level(s) taught,

  5. Home address,

  6. Telephone number,

  7. Title of the entry,

  8. 1000-3000 word essay describing the teaching project.

The essay should describe the teaching project and be written in a style suitable for publication. A project is defined as a single lesson, a unit, or a continuing specific approach to teaching.

Please note that all essays submitted become the property of the Wisconsin Council  of Teachers of English, which may publish any or all of them in suitable media.

 

Recipients of awards should be, or should become, members of the Wisconsin Council of Teachers of English Language Arts. Membership information may be obtained at this web site or from Scott Oates, WCTE Treasurer, English Dept., University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire, WI 54702.

 

All research applications are reviewed by the elected Board of Trustees of the Foundation. All other applications are reviewed by subcommittees appointed by the Board.
