Studio Curriculum Guide General Information
Private instruction is intended to help develop technical and musical skills on an individual's primary or secondary instrument. Obtaining these qualities makes it possible for the student to perform significant solo literature and participate in quality musical ensembles. as a result of these activities, the student will gain insights otherwise unattainable. It is only through performances of quality literature with competent musicians that one can develop the degree of musicianship required for a successful and satisfying career. Developing competence as a performer is a student's only way of obtaining these invaluable musical experiences. To achieve this, music majors are expected to practice a minimum of two hours per day on their assigned repertoire.
All music majors and minors are required to perform a jury at the end of each semester of study. This performance is evaluated by a committee of instrumental faculty members. The jury grade is 25% of the final grade for the semester.
It is the student's responsibility to sign up for a jury time according to the instructions posted at the end of each semester, and perform the jury as scheduled. The remainder of the semester grade (75%) is determined by the studio teacher (according to the various requirements and performance expectations, outlined in this syllabus) based on the individual's progress and competencies demonstrated in weekly lessons. Emphasis is on improvement, but college level performance standards are expected. See repertoire and proficiency requirements for each level of study on the following pages.
Attendance
Attendance at all scheduled lessons is required of all majors and minors. Attendance at all scheduled seminars is required of all majors and encouraged of all minors. Lessons missed due to illness or emergency, will be made up whenever possible, when canceled in advance. When lessons must be canceled due to illness or emergency, the student must contact the studio teacher or music departmental office in advance and leave an appropriate message. It is the student's responsibility to make arrangements to reschedule missed lessons. Lessons missed for reasons other than illness or emergency will not be made up, and will result in a failing grade for that week.
All students are required to attend all brass concerts and recitals, and are encouraged to attend recitals of talented musicians in other areas as well.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
Through regular attendance, observation and participation, develop a fundamental and demonstrable understanding of the Tuba or Euphonium and its appropriate literature, supplemented by independent or individual study of available materials, i.e., recordings, books, recital and concert attendance as well as interaction with colleagues, teachers and other professionals.
GRADING
Grading is based on many different aspects of your individual, musical/professional growth. 1.) Attendance & preparation of lesson materials 2.) Cooperation and the demonstrable desire to improve musically 3.) Scale exam 4.) Semester jury 5.) Fulfillment of the semester performance requirements 6.) Extra credit work: i.e. additional performances, individual research, organizing and performing with a chamber ensemble etc.
SCHEDULING A LESSON
It is your responsibility to schedule lessons. Do so at the beginning of each semester, As Soon As Possible. You must sign up for a lesson and meet with me during the first week of classes. Failure to do so may result in an "F" for that week or being dropped from the enrollment list.
STUDIO EXPENSES
You will be required to purchase method books and solo literature for each semester. These materials will be assigned at the beginning of each semester, be prepared, there may be exceptions. You must order materials on your own through the Robert King Catalog, or home music stores, etc.
LESSON EXPECTATIONS
To make the best use of our time, you are expected to prepare for each lesson. Please do not use your lesson time as a weekly "practice hour". Organize your schedule so that you have a (minimum) of two hours per day of practice time. Prepare your lesson materials appropriately, so we may progress each week. You are expected to bring ALL your materials to every lesson. This includes: method books, solo literature, tapes, notebook, calendar, etc.
LESSON LENGTH

Performance Requirements and Opportunities
Majors
Perform as a soloist (with accompaniment) on at least one convocation or public recital each semester. Freshmen may satisfy this requirement as a member of a chamber ensemble.
Minors
Perform as a soloist or member of a chamber ensemble at least once per academic year.
All tuba and euphonium students are required to perform a solo in a public performance every semester. First semester freshman may choose to perform in a chamber ensemble in place of a solo performance.
BRASS SEMINAR
The Brass Seminar is a recital class for all U.W.W. brass students. It is available as an opportunity to those students preparing works for Convocation or other recital situations. A schedule for Brass Seminars is issued at the beginning of each semester. These seminars will be listed as INSTRUMENTAL SEMINARS on your schedule. It is strongly encouraged, that all students use this opportunity to gain experience performing in public. If you wish to perform on Brass Seminar, you must schedule a time with me in advanced of the proposed seminar date.
CONVOCATION
Convocation is a formal recital situation attended by all U.W.W. music major. A schedule for Convocation is issued at the beginning of each semester. All tuba and euphonium students are required to attend all scheduled Convo's.
STUDY AND SOLO MATERIALS
The selection of study and solo literature will depend on the level and abilities of individual students. The following is a general and brief listing of some of the standard literature for euphonium and tuba categorized by levels. It is recommended that you purchase these solos regardless of whether you have time to perform all of them or not. If you collect all these materials during you time at U.W. Whitewater, you will be well on your way to developing a complete personal library.
