JOHN
TUINSTRA holds BM and MM degrees in Music Education
and a DMA in Tuba Performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison
with minors in Music Education and Conducting. He was an
instructor of instrumental music for four years for the Madison
Area Catholic
Band Program and from 1987 to 1992 he served as Assistant
Conductor for the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras.
He began his association with the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater
Department of Music in 1984 as adjunct Instructor of Tuba and Euphonium,
and founding member of the Whitewater Brass Quintet. In addition
to
those responsibilities at U.W. Whitewater, he is the Assistant
Director of Bands, teaches music education courses, brass techniques,
music appreciation, conducts the Concert Band and supervises
student teachers. Possessing
a keen interest in education, he maintains
an active
schedule
as instructor, guest conductor/adjudicator at festivals, contests
and clinics, and has served on the faculties at various summer camps
throughout the United States and Canada.
Mr.
Tuinstra is Principal Tuba with the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra
and The Wisconsin Wind Orchestra, and has performed with various
orchestras throughout the region, including the Madison, Beloit-Janesville,
Rockford and Dubuque Symphonies. He is the founder of the Southern
Lakes Brass Consort, a flexible instrumentation group ranging from
tuba quartet through brass ensemble. As a performer, he regularly
presents solo recitals and has concertized throughout the midwest,
New England and Great Britain.
His arrangements have been performed at the International Tuba-Euphonium Conference
and are published by T.U.B.A. Press and Encore Music and he has recently commissioned
and premiered three works, Remembrance for Solo Tuba by John Stevens and, Sonatina
for Tuba and Piano and Nocturne for Tuba and String Quartet, both by Frank Ferriano.
His collaboration with Willson U.S.A. and DEG Music Products has resulted in
the development of two new tubas. the 3200 Symphonic F tuba and the 3100 BBb.
Mr. Tuinstra plays the Willson 3200S F tuba.
