New Student Seminar  INTRAUNV 140, sect. 031x
Hyer Hall,12:05-1:55 pm. Fridays
Paula Mohan

The time of life in which you attend college, especially the first year, is an exciting time but also incredibly stressful due to all the challenges and changes. Academic demands are more stringent just as issues in your personal life get more complicated and more undefined. In this way, college represents not just the maturing of your intellectual self, but also marks the transition period in which you mature as a person and prepare for adulthood.  A significant proportion of students who enroll as freshmen in college do not finish for various reasons. This course is designed to make it more likely that you will be successful in beginning, navigating university life, and eventually graduating with a degree, prepared for a career in a profession of your choice.

As such, this course is designed to help give you the practical skills and make you aware of  campus resources that can aid you in making the personal decisions and choices that will help you more successfully navigate the various pitfalls of university life. As such,  the design of the course will be concentric; we'll move from issues dealing with more personalized  problems to those arising in broader contexts. We'll focus initially on issues of personal space,- residence halls and social life-, move on to cover resources available for help in the classroom and extra-curricular activities, and finally, will focus on how best to decide on a major and prepare for a professional career beyond campus.  The structure of the class will be informal and highly interactive with a great deal of input from class members about what topics to cover.

Class requirements: Regular attendance is required and is a necessary but not sufficient means of successfully completing this course. In addition, students will be expected to keep a weekly journal and post their remarks via email.
