Poetry and Lyrics on the Web

As we have discussed in class, poetry and music are great tools for teaching the rhythm of English and the shape of the phrase. The web links below will lead you to poetry and music lyrics. Be advised that poetry and lyrics pages can contain errors in words and spelling. Also, printed lyrics may be slightly different from those that are actually recorded. It is important for you to listen to a song and to transcribe what is actually sung before having students engage in a listening activity.

Check Inez Ramsey's Internet School Library Media Center at James Madison University for links to on-line resources of interest to K-12 teachers (and teachers of adults, too). She has many poetry links, including a page devoted to Shel Silverstein.

Check Gustavo Ortiz Millan's Anthology of 20th Century Mexican Poetry to find poems in original Spanish and translations in English and French.

The University of Michigan's American Verse Project contains hundreds of American poems.

Song Lyrics Online is a searchable database of lyrics, indexed by artist.
