Families and children should not be without a place to live.

That belief is at odds with realities at the start of the 21st century. More than a million children and their parents will be homeless this year.

It is imperative that those of us who work with homeless families and children are as effective as possible in both helping them directly and in working toward a community and a society where homelessness is a rare and fleeting event.
