PURPOSE

To examine the following questions: What is theory? What is the relationship between theory and practice? What is the role of theory in political and social action? In personal life? What are the main types and concepts of feminist theories? What does it mean to do theory?

WORK

There will be two take-home essay exams midterm and final (5-7 pages double-spaced typed each). Each person will present a 2-3 page typed position paper on one of the assigned readings to be presented orally and turned in. These may define concepts, take issue with assumptions, or interpret parts of the author's position. Each position paper will be assigned two readers to critique it and initiate discussion. Your response as a reader will be counted in your participation grade. We will also do some in-class exercises with theory and everyone will do a short computer-assisted research project on chosen or assigned topics from the readings.

GRADING

The grade will be based on the following percentages: midterm 20%, final 20%, position paper 20%, exercises 20%, participation 20%.

RELIGIOUS OBSERVANCES. If you must attend a religious observance at a time the class meets, please arrange to make up the work.
