a/b: Auto/Biography Studies
a/b: Auto/Biography Studies is a journal of scholarship devoted to autobiography, biography, diaries, letters and relations between lifewriting and other discourse. The editors invite manuscript submissions dealing with any aspect of lifewriting. Subject matter may be drawn from any period or genre but must show clear connections to the theory and practice of lifewriting. In addition to scholarly articles we invite contributions in the form of book reviews, calls for papers, announcements of conferences and the like. Contributions should follow MLA style. a/b is published biannually by the English Department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The editorial office is partially supported by the Department of Languages and Literatures at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

In 1985, as a result of the "First International Symposium on Autobiography and Autobiography Studies" put on at Louisiana State University by James Olney, Barbara Sher started a newsletter, a/b: Auto/Biography Studies, so that scholars and teachers of lifewriting could stay in touch with each other and share information about areas of common interest. By the time the second issue appeared, the news letter already included bibliographies and a review. The newsletter very rapidly became a full-fledged journal. The first three volumes of the journal came out four times a year after which it became biannual. Barbara Sher, without whose energy, commitment, and hard work none of this would ever have happened, edited the journal from Volume 1 through Volume 3.2. Starting with Volume 2, she was assisted by Rebecca Hogan, Timothy Dow Adams, and Tom Smith, who oversaw the production Issues 2.2-3.1 at Pennsylvania State University-Schuylkill. By this time each issue of the journal was devoted to a particular topic and overseen by a guest editor.
In 1988, Barbara Sher stepped down as editor and a/b moved from New York to West Virginia University where Issues 3.2-4.1 were produced under the editorship of Timothy Dow Adams and Rebecca Hogan. Each issue was still edited by a guest editor. Starting with Volume 4.2, Rebecca and Joseph Hogan took over the editorship, and the editorial and production offices of the journal moved to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. They set up an editorial review process, making a/b a juried journal. They produced Issue 4.2, the first open issue, and Issue 5.1 at UW-W. Judith Melton at Clemson University produced the camera ready copy for these issues. Timothy Dow Adams and Tom Smith consulted as coeditors.
In 1990, the hard work of Associate Editor William Andrews and the generosity of the Joyce and Elizabeth Hall Center for the Humanities at the University of Kansas provided a home for a/b's production and subscription office. The support of the Hall Center also allowed the journal to expand to its current 300 pages a year. A distinguished editorial board was formed and the editorial review process was formalized. 5.2 was the first issue to come out of Kansas in a new format with the characteristic teal cover for spring and burgundy for fall. Now began the practice of publishing an open issue and a special issue each year. Guest editors (in consultation with editors) would oversee a cluster of essays dealing with a special topic. Recent special issues include: "Rethinking Russian Autobiography" (1996), "Terms of Identity: Essays on the Theoretical Terminology of Lifewriting" (1995), "Canons and Traditions" (1994), "Feminist Biography" (1993), "Native American Identities and Autobiography" (1992), "Disease, Disability and Lifewriting" (1991). Volumes 5.2-11.2 were published in this collaboration between editorial office at Whitewater and the production office at the Hall Center in Kansas.
Beginning with Volume 12.1, again with the tireless assistance of William Andrews and the generosity of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill English Department, the journal will be produced there while Rebecca and Joseph Hogan maintain the editoral office at Whitewater. The journal has been the product of the collaboration of many people, including a distinguished editorial board; undergraduate editorial interns at Whitewater; graduate student managing editors at Kansas and Chapel Hill; guest editors; all those scholars who, in addition to the editorial board, have read essays; and all those who have submitted so many interesting papers over the years.
