EFFIGY POT
WARRIOR WITH BEAN BAG
LMA 6600

Size:  16.5 cm tall
Manufacture: Modelled
Surface: Slip painted
Firing:  Oxidizing

The human effigy pot is primarily found in the earlier phases of Nasca culture. They usually show an individual seated and bearing an offering. In this case, a man holds what appears to be a bean bag. From the beginning the Nasca potter had an extensive palette of colored slips to choose from, as is demonstrated in this pot. These slips were added after the pot had dried and before firing. Compare this vessel with the later Nasca Phase 6 face neck vessel, or that of the Recuay. Bean bag carriers can also be seen in one of the Moche vessels.

EFFIGY POT
MUMMY
LMA 6647

Size:  cm tall
Manufacture: Modelled
Surface: Slip painted
Firing:  Oxidizing

The effige pots of the Nasca are not as sophisticated in their form as those of the Moche. Often, the Nasca relied on painted featured rather than modelled, with only a few protrusions, like the hands in this case.

STIRRUP POT
ANTHROPOMORPHIC MYTHICAL BEING
LMA 8890

Size:  21 cm tall, 17 cm diameter
Manufacture: Modeled
Surface: Slip painted
Firing:  Oxidizing

This figure occurs quite frequently on Nasca vessels. It has a human body clothed in a shirt and breechcloth. The being wears a distinctive mask and forehead ornament. In this example, the being carries a staff, perhaps connecting it to the cult of the Staff God. During Phase 3 of the Nasca culture, the tail was depicted with a series of spikes running along both sides. The animal at the end, in this case a bird, seems to indicate what aspect of the being is emphasized. Three trophy heads dangle from a sash. This vessel contains nine colors of slip: dark red, black, cream, gray, orange, violet, white, yellow, and light red.

Another version of the Anthropomorphic Mythical Being, this time appears to be wearing a monkey mask. His robe is lined with pepinos rather than trophy heads, and he has no bird on his tail.

BOWL
AVIAN MYTHICAL BEINGS
LMA 8890

Size:  12 cm diameter
Manufacture: Modeled
Surface: Slip painted
Firing:  Oxidizing

This little bowl has two different masked figures running around its body. Their style appears to be similar to the Nasca 3 vessel, but there are a few subtle differences. First, the beings do not have spiked tails. Second, the feet dangle downward rather than sideways. These are both indications of the later period. The figures wear masks with bird motifs, suggesting that these are avian or sky deities. The techniques of production, however, have not changed, and the bowl is decorated with the wide array of colored slips typical of the Nasca.

EFFIGY POT
BIRD
LMA 7237

Size:  cm tall
Manufacture: Modelled
Surface: Slip painted
Firing:  Oxidizing

Animal effigy vessels were popular with the Nasca. Unlike their Moche counterparts, the Nasca abstracted and simplified their animal forms, and thus tend to be symbolic rather than naturalistic.

EFFIGY POT
TROPHY HEAD
LMA 7247

Size:  cm tall
Manufacture: Modelled
Surface: Slip painted
Firing:  Oxidizing

This vessel vessel offers a fine comparison between the Moche and the Nasca outlook. Almost cartoonlike, this vessel lacks any of the portraiture evident in the Moche vessels.
