New York World's Fair 1939-40: Night SceneThis is a scene from the 1939-1940 New York World's Fair. The "Lagoon of Nations" featured a fireworks/fountain/gas-fired-flame spectacle evening, designed by M. Jean Labatut, who taught architecture at Princeton. The music for these fifteen-minute shows (six in all) was written by Robert Russell Bennett and performed by a 50-member band that included members of the New York Philharmonic-Symphony, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and NBC Symphony as well as 28 alumni of the Sousa Band. Sadly, the spectacles were never filmed; Bennett's music survives, but is unpublished and unrecorded.
