Flat Stanley at UW-Whitewater

by Mary Jo deMeza, October 2001

Last week Flat Stanley arrived at my home in Whitewater, Wisconsin. Whitewater is a small city located 45 miles south-west of Milwaukee. Milwaukee is Wisconsin's largest city and is on the western shore of Lake Michigan, one of the Great Lakes.

Flat Stanley is at my home in Whitewater. I tried to get Stan to help me rake some leaves, but he just kept getting swept away by the wind.
I work at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and Stanley came to work with me every day. Here we are in the Learning Technology Center, getting our picture taken with a digital camera. This camera takes pictures that go directly into a computer, so they can be easily shared with other people like you!
I work in a big computer lab with 200 computers that are used by university students to do their homework and class projects. Flat Stanley helped me open the lab every morning. He learned to fix broken computers. He used the lab computers to connect to the Internet and learn everything about the UW-Whitewater campus.
Flat Stanley makes a new friend. His name is Mike!
Mike and Flat Stanley went to the Observatory, which has a very big telescope. Students and professors use the telescope to look at stars and planets in the night sky.
They also went to the University Center. The University Center is where everyone goes to eat, talk and meet people. There is also a bowling alley, pool tables, darts, and a place to rent equipment for outdoor activities.
Flat Stanley visited Young Auditorium. Young Auditorium is where people go to see plays or concerts or hear the Chancellor speak.
Stanley also went to a residence hall to visit one of the places where some of the college students live. He talked with people and made many friends.

Stanley wanted to visit Chicago to see the Sears Tower. Chicago is a big city about one hundred miles south-east of Whitewater, known as the Windy City. It was too far to drive to Chicago, so instead we used a computer to put Stanley inside a picture of the Windy City.

I enjoyed having Flat Stanley visit me in Wisconsin. Everyone I work with liked him very much. Flat Stanley learned many new computer skills from Lorna Wong and David Delgado, the helpful people in the Learning Technology Center who helped make this web site.
